@MysticRiver Since the foreign license is valid for those with PR for 3 months, is it better to take an international drivers license as well?
If am having an intl license, then will I be able to use it indefinitely or will it be required for me to get an Aus license?
I don't think PR holders are allowed to drive more than 3 months without a local license, even if they have international driving license.

One of my cousin recently moved to Adelaide along his two kids and wife. He mentioned a couple of things which are mentioned below:

1- International Driving License
2- International ID card (NICOP is for Pakistan I guess)
3- Clothes / Blankets
4- AUD $6000 ( For any initial expenses e.g Rent / Food / Travel )
Hey Rakshanda, i was watching this thread and saw your response. i would say, 6000$ is nothing when you move along with your family and that really matters, if you don't have a job. my experience says, you really need a big numbers in money before you even think about moving without a job.

I guess, depends on the job profile and the job market but to minimum to take a back up of 6 months or 1 year at least. I guess, any sensible will take the decision and doing some research before make a move. It also depends, if some one will try to get some sort of low profile job to start with. I would suggest to consider at least 4-5k per month and then multiply with the months he wants to back up with. This expense, I am telling from my experience in Sydney for 4 years. it can vary for other states.

this also lead me to the question, what monetary help anyone gets when he move along with the family and having a school going kid. Is he going to get some benefit from the government to support his expenses from the first day or once he enroll with the human services department of Australia?

This one I agree.

I would suggest to consider at least 4-5k per month
This one I don't. For a family of 3, one can live within 2.5K easily if home-cooked. If he/she decide to use a shared accommodation, he/she can make it within 2k. The reason is, with no job, it is expected that one would be careful with his/her expenditure.

Of course, initial settling cost (furniture etc.) is separate, as it'd vary person to person.

Not until 2 years. All you get for free is child education and general medicare.

thanks Mystic for correcting me, may be the figures, i have given when i was in Job but still its difficult with 2.5 k in Sydney, may be let me know the trick :) so that i can save some for me.

You mentioned 2 years before get any monetary assistance so my question is, work permit duration, like 457 considered be included in the 2 years? or is it just count PR duration?

I have not seen any job-holder with family spends less than the figure you mentioned, but also, I know a number of people (mainly students or ones without a job) live within 2-2.5K.

I think, the figure touches 5K because, usually the job holders have several mortgages like car loan, house loan, health insurances, car insurances, babysitting cost etc.

If you take those out of the equations, you should be getting a 2-bedroom apartment within $400 a week (outer suburbs in Sydney), utilities $200 a month. The rest is the daily expenses which should be manageable within $500-$600/month.

Again, I am thinking from the perspective of a student or someone who does not have a job. If someone can't start a day without a $10 coffee in the morning supplemented by few extra cups during the day, and with the habit of frequent dining out, I am not considering them in this equation :).

No, only Australian residency period will be counted.

https://www.humanservices.gov.au/individuals/services/centrelink/newstart-allowance/who-can-get-it

Department of Human Service said:
You must be an Australian resident and be in Australia for 104 weeks before you can get Newstart Allowance.

New residents may have to wait 104 weeks before they can get most of our payments or use our services. This doesn’t apply to family assistance payments.

The waiting period is time spent in Australia as an Australian resident.

thanks Mystic for guiding on this situation. I know, could be the child care cost was the driving point and depends, how you live and spend. Anyway, let me see, how it go with me but I am putting my funds considering 4k per month for expenses to be there at least for a year without any job ( taking the worst case). I hope, i will get job before than.
