Dear,

My wife had been granted the 489 Subsequent Entry Pathway just now. She is in Bangladesh and we are currently in the process of bringing her here.

As this is not a permanent residency visa, does she need to apply for a Covid 19 Travel Exemption to enter Australia?

Any information or suggestion will be highly appreciated.

Regards
Xaved

Hi Mohsin

Thanks for your reply. I already checked the link couple of times, and have drafted an exemption application form for me.

I will apply in the critical skill category and my current job/projects can provide sufficient evidence for that.

My wife will apply in the compassionate reason category.

Both of us are a bit confused as to what travel dates we put in, these are the intended travel dates or they need to be the actual ones?

If we buy and attach the itinerary/tickets and our travel exemption application is not granted, what do we do then?

I am sorry if these are silly questions but I haven't got anyone on the same situation.

Thanks
Xaved

You have chosen the correct categories. Rest is at Australian authority's disposal.

I believe intended dates would cover it. But try to be realistic, and put the dates based on your best possible scenario. You can also show a booking (not purchased ticket), if required.

Hi Mohd,

You can apply for compassionate reasons category for your wife (or she can). What is the situation in your wife's country, do they have sufficient flights? And I assume there is a very long waiting period and ticket prices are sky-high.

Looking at the current situation in Australian travel restriction, Covid situation in my wife's country and analysing the recent news, I am under the following "assumptions" :
  • Provisional approval in Australia has been given for few of the vaccines and rest are under trials, the first batch of vaccine (Oxford) will be available during the last quarter of February. Then TGA will scrutinise the suitability for couple of months, so hopefully by the end of July we will get to know something about the most suitable vaccine type.
  • Due to less number of flights and comparatively higher number of people waiting to get into Australia, there is a long queue for inbound passengers from all over the world, mostly South Asian countries. From my research, no flight is available from where my wife is right now until May at this stage.
  • Now, if we consider the two abovementioned situations, the earliest dates (if everything goes well) that we can expect will be mid August and onwards. But it is a good sign that Australian Government has already started granting visas.
Again, these are just my assumptions and situations will vary depending on how effective the vaccines will be.

Hi MysticRiver,

Thanks a lot for your reply and clearing out the confusions, I was under the same assumption but couldn't be sure enough.

Hey, guys, I have a 489 skilled regional visa granted in December 2019, and my career just included in the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation list, as a critical skill (Civil Engineer), but I still offshore, and if I want to ask for a travel exemption, they will ask me to be sponsored by an employer, how could be possible if I still overseas and didn´t make the first entry? any idea, please!!!

I got this response from them :
Skilled Regional (Provisional) subclass 489 visa and 491 visas

The Department is aware there are visa holders who are currently overseas and cannot return to Australia to satisfy work and residence requirements to apply for a permanent visa.

Subclass 489 and 491 visa holders will need to have a travel exemption from the Australian Border Force Commissioner to enter Australia. Exemptions to travel to Australia are assessed on a case-by-case basis. Information about applying for an exemption is available on the Department’s website.

This office cannot assist with applications for travel exemptions.

Regards
Xaved
