Hi All,

Thought about starting a discussion on the mobile networks available across Australia and their plans and tariffs, so that potential immigrants can have a quick glance and get accustomed to the details. Furthermore, I consider this as a step to bring MD to a one-stop-shop for all immigration related queries that may arise in a person's mind! Believe that many current members would be able to contribute well into this topic.

With some research, I got to know that there are 3 major players and a number of subsidiary service providers. The major ones include Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, with the primary being Telstra which has the vast coverage (even across the bushes and the outbacks), though the other two operates vastly across the capital towns with Optus having wider coverage across the regional areas - compared to Vodafone.

Yet to know the best plans and choices for international voice calls. Will keep on adding to this, and hope for the input from others as well. :)

If you want to save money, you should forget about big 3, simple as that. There are many cheap brands (which actually uses the big 3 infrastructure with some limitations) like LycaMobile, Aldi, Amaysim, Boost etc. In my experience, among these resellers, Lyca is relatively better.

I'm with Vodafone for now but still haven't signed up for a monthly plan. It was just a temporary chip. I liked the coverage so far and the only times I ended up with no connection sometimes was when I was at Great Ocean Road area.

I think I will stick to Vodafone to keep the number I already have and try to get a new mobile as well. Just to save me the hassle of having to look up for another carrier.

Sure thing boss! I've been away since I didn't take my laptop with me and one thing I don't like to do on mobile is navigating forums. I'm now back in Brazil for 3 weeks and will catch up with you guys. Can't wait to go back to Sydney for good though. I'm still in pure awe.

i am also on vodafone, still pre-paid though as they have some really good deals at the moment (double data for 3 recharges). so I am going to stick with that until after the third recharge. will likely sign up with vodafone for 12 months. happy with the service and coverage.

Below is the Prepaid SIM only plan , by comparing it seems Vodafone is competitive in terms of price, offering among the Big 3 and the validity.
You end up paying 10$ more than Lyca, Amaysim without worrying for any coverage during travel by road.

Telstra/Vodafone/ and some other operators have some 50% on SIM price till some date in July. The price listed here is without any discounts.
I heard Lyca is good in Adelaide but a friend said about the coverage on his road trip from ADL to SYD.

Operator/Price/Data in GB/ Voice calls,Text/ International Calls/ Validity in Days
Telstra
/40$/5GB/Unlimited/Unlimited to India and some countries/28 days
Vodafone/40$/6GB/Unlimited/1000 Minutes/35 days
Optus/40$/10GB/Unlimited/Unlimited to India and some countries/28 days
Lyca/30$/2GB/Unlimited/Unlimited to India and some countries/28 days
Amaysim/30$/5GB/Unlimited/Unlimited to India and some countries/28 days

Comments are welcome!

In the end I still chose Amaysim, because I can recharge it and it will be valid for a year.
Coverage still ok within Syd.
