Hi guys,

I have received my ACS Skill Assessment results in September 18, which as follows:

Your skills have been assessed to be suitable for migration under 261313 (Software Engineer) of the ANZSCO Code. Your qualification has been assessed as follows:

Your Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering from University of Mumbai completed May 2009 has been assessed as comparable to an AQF Bachelor Degree with a Major in computing.

The following employment after February 2015 is considered to equate to work at an appropriately skilled level and relevant to 261313 (Software Engineer) of the ANZSCO Code.

Dates: 02/11 - 01/12 - 0 year(s) 11 month(s)
Position: Software Engineer
Employer: XXXXXXXX
Country: India

Dates: 01/12 - 02/14 - 2 year(s) 1 month(s)
Position: Consultant
Employer: XXXXXXXX
Country: India

Dates: 02/14 - 07/17 - 3 year(s) 5 month(s)
Position: Senior Software Engineer
Employer: XXXXXXXX
Country: India

Dates: 07/17 - 03/18 - 0 year(s) 8 month(s)
Position: Engineer II
Employer: XXXXXXXX
Country: India

Dates: 03/18 - 08/18 - 0 year(s) 5 month(s)
Position: Analyst
Employer: XXXXXXXX
Country: India

They have deducted my 4 years and I have no clue for what reason they have done it. I have taken RNR from one of my friend whose skill assessment is completed successfully as well as we have the same engineering degree.
1. I have collected experience documents from HR, except my current company.
2. I have completed diploma+ engineering (both Major in Computer)

I have asked a few queries to the ACS team and they gave a very generic answer as follows:

As your Bachelor degree was assessed as an ICT Major and Not being closely related to the nominated occupation, you were required to demonstrate 4 years of experience in any time period.

Again I asked queries but they gave me generic reply:

The “Skill Level Requirement Met Date” will be noted on your ACS result letter and will be determined by the outcome of the suitability criteria.
All relevant work experience completed after the “Skill Level Requirement Met Date” will be considered “Skilled Employment” and eligible for points under the skilled migration points test.
The work experience required to meet the suitability criteria is NOT included as “Skilled Employment” and is NOT eligible for points under the skilled migration points test.

The date provided in your skill assessment result letter is the date you have met the ACS requirements.

As your Bachelor has been assessed as being comparable to an AQF Bachelor with a major in computing that is not closely related to the nominated occupation, you are required to demonstrate 4 years of relevant experience. This is completed on 02/2015. Work experience from 02/2011 + 4 years = 02/2015.

02/2015 is the date you have met the ACS requirements and is the date in which you are deemed to have reached the appropriate skilled level for your nominated occupation.

Following is my qualification and experience:
Qualification: 1. Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering from University of Mumbai
2. Diploma in Computer Technology from Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE)
Experience: Software Engineer
ANZSCO Code applied: 261313 - Software Engineer
Total Experience: 7+ (from the year 2011 till now)
As per my qualification and experience, I understand that only 2 years from experience should be deducted.

I have gone through many forums and have discussed my case with people, they suggested me:
1. To check whether my subjects in both in Engineering and Diploma are having 65% of the ICT Content. -
First of all, I am very confused for same Engineering degree people have received positive skill assessment. Even I discussed with my friend who know a person who has done Diploma+ Degree, received positive skill assessment.
Also, recently (in September) a person got a positive skill assessment for Dip (2003)+Degree (2006) (both from Mumbai).

Secondly, to match my Dip+degree subjects do I need to compare those subjects with the list given for ANZSCO code ICT Content? I have matched those and I found few subjects which are matching with the subjects that I have studied. So, again, question is how people having same Dip+Degree have got positive skill assessment? Is there any other way of comparing subject list to get 65%?
2. Go for an APPEAL -
In one of the forum thread a person who was in similar situation filed an appeal and got positive result. He downloaded brochure for the degree he had studied and mentioned the details of his subjects in that appeal. Is this the only way to file an appeal?

I am completely annoyed and frustrated. Have spent hours and hours to find the root cause for deducting 4 years. Also, not able to finalize the content for an appeal.

Kindly help those who have knowledge about such kind of scenario.

From what I know, ACS doesn't consider contractual positions, so if any point in time your were on a different payroll (contractor) then ACS will deduct that too. Same is the case with part time employment.
Also the roles and responsibilities written on the reference letters (or affidavits) does play an important role while considering that experience.

There might be some error from
Your CO as they have already assessed your degree as Major so no questions for ICT contents. Secondly for any job they have not commented anything like not relevant etc. What i believe based on my personal experience is that they have either missed some of your documents or they wrongly evaluated your documents. Just send an email to your CO and ask politey, they will respond with the proper justification (if any) or else will provide an updated result

How do I get CO email id? I have already mailed them twice and they gave me a generic reply.

I did not have any part-time or on contract employment all are with the company and have submitted letters from HR except current company.

This is not a Generic reply but very specific to your case. Its unfortunate that ACS considered the Bachelor Degree as ICT Major but still does not consider it closely related to nominated occupation in your case.

Your case is actually causing me to worry now (as my ACS assessment is in process and my degree is also Computer Engineering from Mumbai University).

Your case is actually causing me to worry now (as my ACS assessment is in process and my degree is also Computer Engineering from Mumbai University).

But I have not seen a single case where Mumbai University's Computer Engineering course is not considered to a nominated occupation which is 261313 (Software Engineer). Moreover, I have a completed Diploma in Computer Technology.

I think the way ACS has compiled my result, they should have mentioned the reason to deduct 4 years their itself. From the result, it is not evident. If I would have completed a course which is either not at all related or partially related to 261313, then the 4-year deduction is understandable. Anyways, I wanted to take help from you guys so that I could understand things better and can take further steps.

Thanks all for the replies.

@imhere007 : Did u ask for a review to ACS or any other update?

I too got a deduction of 4 years for same degree (2003) for 261112 (Systems Analyst).

I'd start with a polite email in rely to your result asking them to clarify the reason for 4 year deduction. It's usually if it's ICT major but not closely related to nominated occupation

Hey, even in my case they have deducted 4 years of my initial experience. I was not on contract. I have overall 13+ exp so, after after deduction it will be 9+. Is this good enough?
Thanks in advance.

Can you please help me on the below as how much experience will be considered by ACS. I want to apply for 189 visa.

I have total almost 10 yrs. work exp. (in Business Analyst + Project Management) and need to claim 15 or at least 10 points to have total 75 points. I was thinking of applying for ICT Business Analyst (code 2611111), I was told by y-axis consultant that ACS deducts 4 yrs. for non-263---- codes (ie non-software engineer, development) and also if the ICT major is not totally relevant for job code applying for (in this case ICT Business Analyst). I have B.Tech in Computer science and MBA and Masters in Business Intelligence &Analytics.

As per her, I will only get 5 points and hence, total 70 points, which is less for 189.

Also, is it mandatory to have experience in software solutions for BA. I have 3 years in telecom solutions. Will it not be considered under ICT only.

Can you please help.

I want to understand, what units in ICT major are closely related to the nominated occupation for ICT Business Analyst. If ACS deduct 4 years for B.E/B.Tech, what qualifications they look for as being closely related to this skill. Has anyone got only 2 years deducted in ACS assessment vs. 4 years for ICT BA role. I know people, who applied for Software Engineering and B.E got only 2 years deducted.

The maximum overseas experience you can claim for points is 8 years, so I would not worry about that.

If you have a Bachelor which is ICT major AND closely related to your nominated occupation (i.e. 261111), ACS will deduct 2 years from last 10 years' experience.
If you have a Bachelor which is ICT major, but NOT closely related to your nominated occupation (i.e. 261111), ACS will deduct 4 years from total experience.

If you have a Bachelor which is ICT minor AND closely related to your nominated occupation (i.e. 261111), ACS will deduct 5 years from last 10 years' experience.
If you have a Bachelor which is ICT minor, but NOT closely related to your nominated occupation (i.e. 261111), ACS will deduct 6 years from total experience.

For details, check the link below:

ACS assessment suitability criteria - Year deduction from experience

Only relevant work experiences matter.

I am not aware of nitty-gritty details in your field, but the actual course content will matter, not only the degree name.
