Hi Experts,

I'm planning to apply ACS assessment under Software Engineer (ANZSCO 261313) with BSc Computer Engineering Degree.

According to the ACS guideline document, It is mentioned that In all educational qualifications, 65% of the ICT content must be closely related to the nominated occupation (ANZSCO) to meet the suitability criteria.

If not, ACS will deduct 4 years from the work experience. (instead of 2 years)

Based on my calculation, I have around 55-60% ICT Subjects closely related to my occupation (Software Engineer). My degree also contains the following subjects which cannot be claimed as closely related to Software Engineer occupation.

Network Analysis for Computer Engineering
Logic Networks
Signals and Systems for Computer Engineering
Computer and Data Networks
Computer and Network Security
Communication Engineering
Digital Signals and Systems
Digital communication
Computer Architecture

1) Anyone gone through the same situation and ACS deducts 4 years? Does ACS strictly require more than 65% ICT units to be related to Occupation?

2) My degree almost covers each and every ICT units mentioned under Software Engineer in the following document. But, due to the above non-programming related subjects, I couldn't satisfy the 65% rule.

ANZSCO Code Information - 2017 V4

Appreciate your inputs if anyone has gone through the same situation !!

I am slightly uncertain but fairly certain they will deduct 4 years work experience in your case as you don’t quite meet the 65% rule. ACS is pretty pedantic when it comes to meeting strict guidelines for assessment purposes.

Well I have major ICT and both bachelor and master degree in IT with major in computing but still they detect my 4 years from overall experience.

I can confirm that my degree is major in ICT as it contains more than 50% ICT content. The problem is in the number of subjects which is closely related to my occupation (Software Engineer)

It depends entirely on what position you are requesting assessment for. Your major might be in ICT but if you’re requesting for assessment in software engineer then you still need to have done 65% units that still relate to software engineer in your ICT degree. They both need not necessarily be one and the same. Hence they might have winded by deducting 4 years from your experience.

Thats is not a issue problem is that u have ICT major or not.

But I found below from the ACS guideline document. Even if my degree is ICT Major, It is still possible for 4 year deduction.

If your degree is assessed as having an ICT major which is NOT closely related to your nominated occupation, you will require 4 years relevant work experience completed anytime in your past work history to meet the suitability criteria.

This is where I got confused. My degree contains almost every subjects that are listed under ANZCO 261313 (Software Engineer). But when you calculate the percentage (i.e Subject related to Software Engineer/ALL ICT Subjects)*100 , there is a possibility that you won't meet the 65% rule if your non-programming ICT subjects are many...

Now that’s confusing. Did you try contacting ACS to get clarification?

I did my bachelors in Computer Science Engineering and when I applied for assessment only the first 2 years were taken for it.

To be clear I got assessment done for 261313 as well

I haven't submitted my degree for assessment yet so I couldn't get direct clarification from ACS. btw, for your assessment, they have deducted 2 years from your work experience? your degree contains more than 65% subjects related to Software engineer occupation?

Yes my degree contains more than 65% soft engg units.

That is strange. Wonder what the criteria that they further use to differentiate for deducting 2 or 4 years

Based on the ACS guideline docs, There is another factor for the 4-year deduction. If one of your past employment (i.e 2 years) is not related to your occupation (i.e Software Engineer), ACS will deduct that 2 years too. All of your past work experiences fall under software engineer?

From ACS :
At least 65% of the duties detailed in the employment reference must be relevant to the nominated occupation for the experience to be deemed closely related to the nominated occupation (ANZSCO).

@Alwin.oz ACS deducted 4 years on my TOTAL work experience.

My degree is BS in Computer Engineering. My ANZSCO code is 262111 (Database Administrator) and I have around 15 years of work experience as DBA.
