Hi MysticRiver I would appreciate your patience in answering my question regarding the partner`s English. actually, I am filling up my 189 application these days and I find a question asking for the Partner`s IELTS, I selected NO in that question (she has no IELTS report) but however, I ticked YES in functional English ability question. My question is that if I submit my application with that case will I have to pay the extra charges along with the normal fees or there is a time lime would be giving based on my wife`s functional English capability after the app. submission.
thx

I did the same, and only paid the Visa fees alone upon lodging the Visa application

You might need to pay the 2nd installment IF you are unable to prove that your spouse has functional English

For my case, my case officer asked for proof which I had given my spouse's university completion letter stating that her entire degree was conducted in English thus need not pay that extra fees.

MysticRiver might be able to help confirm :)

Many thanks and appreciate your fast reply. That means I will not be shouldered the extra installment at the same moment I submit the app. if no partner`s IELTS score is there but I have to prove it later on. Am I right?

That second installment is payable at the end of your visa process, that is at the time of visa grant notification (if you can't prove by that time). Initially you will just need to pay the primary fee.

The time varies. Normally it takes 2-5 weeks for case officer to be assigned, and then he gives around 4 weeks for submitting documents. If for some reason you fail to collect any doc within that time, you can ask for time extension (with proper reasoning) and normally they allow.

And FYI, your partner just needs an average of 4.5, unlike you.

As an advice of a friend of mine- if your partner has 'limited' english only, it would be better to pay the 2nd VAC and attend the tuition classes instead of trying to achieve band 4,5 (this if you have the amount of money at the time, of course). He said that when he settled down in Sydney with his wife, she encountered many language barriers that would be best to acclimate her in English attending the AMES Australia program rather than paying a private full english course.

Agreed to that. If anybody is planning to migrate to a country, he/she needs to have the working knowledge of local language to survive day to day life. So it should not be seen for something only for getting the Visa. And like Marcos said, it'll be damn expensive if you want to pay for any private course (or any private thing actually) in Australia.

Hi everyone here,

I will like to ask about proving of functional English points as below, taken from DIBP
  • Completed all years of primary education and at least three years of secondary education in an educational institution in or outside Australia and all instructions were in English.
  • Completed at least five years of secondary education in an institution in or outside Australia and all instructions were in English.
  • Successfully completed at least one year of full-time study or equivalent part-time study towards a degree, higher degree, diploma, or associate diploma in an institution in Australia and all instructions were in English.
  • Completed a degree, a higher degree, a diploma or a trade certificate that required at least two years of full-time study or training in an institution in or outside Australia and all instructions were in English.

How do I prove that all the instructions from an education institution were in English? Do I have to go to the educational institution to ask them to indicate, as the certificates of my partner were more 20 years ago and also taught in English.

Thanks!

Yes, you need to have some certificate from the educational institution. They usually provide some certificate of "medium of instruction" or similar.

I am also looking to find a good ielts panchkula institute to prepare for my ielts exam this year. I am thinking of leaving for Canada for my further studies. I am good with my English but I have no idea about the exam so it’ll be fruitful for me.

Consider before posting:

  • Always post in a relevant thread or open a new one.
  • Better to use the reactions in a post to congratulate/thank.
