An embarrassing question... I had a small incident happened when i was studying in Australia over 10 years ago which i am not proud of... it left me with a criminal record, no imprisonment, but fined. It was over the possession and use of fake ID. I was obviously an idiot back then without too much sense and hung with the wrong group of people.
I learnt my lesson the hard way, and ever since then, I worked very hard to rectify and caught up with my life. I did well at work and pursued a master degree.
I am hoping to settle in Australia, and I know honesty is the best policy. But I want to know if this black history of mine will stop me from getting into Australia. I think about this day and. I regretted so much and hated myself for being such an idiot.

Well, that's a decision that DIBP will take based on the severity of the crime. I think you have enough reason to be optimistic for something that was settled only with a fine. Had it been a severe one, you'd have faced a bigger trouble back then.

However, the final say will be from DIBP, no point of speculation.

@MysticRiver thanks! Would you suggest that I get a background check first to see what's in the record so I can be better prepared?

Even if you have the record, still I don't think you can be certain of DIBP's action. But of course, you can do that if that doesn't cost you a lot.

Understood. I blame myself all the time for being sooooo stupid.

I hope DIBP won't make lots of fuss about some 10 years' old minor incident.

@MysticRiver I just looked up online, it looks like I cannot apply for NSW police record online. Is that correct? I'm offshore, is there any way to do this? Thanks a lot!!

I believe you need to apply from AFP, not NSW

Individuals requiring a criminal record check for Australian citizenship, residency, spouse visa, guardianship of a child from another country, working visa or whilst travelling or living abroad, must apply via the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Details on applying for a criminal record check via the AFP is available at www.afp.gov.au
