An Australian permanent resident can live, work and study without restriction in Australia. They can avail most of the benefits offered to an Australian citizen, like free healthcare and education. The main difference is they cannot vote in the federal and state elections. However, they can apply for Australian citizenship in 4 years, provided they meet certain criteria. They Below are few benefits they can avail:
  • You can freely live and work in Australia same as the citizens, except few federal government jobs.
  • Unrestricted rights to live, work and study in New Zealand.
  • Eligibility for social security benefits and associated services. Few examples are child care benefit, health care benefit (after 2 years), unemployment benefit (after 2 years) etc. A detail can be found in here and Department of Human Services websites.
  • Free medicare - Government bear the cost of general consultation and pathological test. However, you have to pay for specialized cases, unless you have a health insurance.
  • Education is free up to tertiary level. The schools in your living area are bound to take your children by law. Each state government manages the school system within their state. This means that they provide funds and regulation for their schools. The national government provides the funding for universities in all the states. A detail can be found in Studying in Australia page.
  • Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders can access the Higher Education Loans Program (HELP) and the associated discount for up-front payments. More information is available at Study Assist.
  • Sponsor the family members to be permanent residents. Your partner and children can directly get permanent residency as your dependent, whereas you can sponsor certain relatives to get temporary residency which leads to a permanent residency in 2 years.
  • You can enjoy visa-free travel to New Zealand.
  • The support during pregnancy & childbirth

Dear MysticRiver

We had a boy recently and emailed CO about the birth and uploaded required documents (Passport, Birth Certificate and signed copy of Form 1022) in ImmiAccount under my name on 4th Nov. I requested CO to send HAP ID for my newborn son for completing the health examinations. I also submitted online Form 1022 in the immiaccount.

I did not email the documents to CO, instead uploaded them directly to Immiaccount. Because in previous emails from CO it is written at the end, “Please submit documents by attaching colour scans to your visa application using ImmiAccount.”

It has been 17 days after sending the email and until now there is no reply from CO.

I have read on forums to get quick response for adding newborn baby to the application, we can email the documents (baby’s Passport, Birth Certificate and signed copy of Form 1022) to <Email Truncated>.

Pls. advice is it okay to email the documents to <Email Truncated>, CC to <Email Truncated> Or else wait until CO will respond to the email?

I almost have a similar query to that with some enhancements.

1- What if a person gets a grant and he/she didn't mentioned in the application about expecting to have a baby soon, what will be done in this regards? How and what will be the requirements to take the new born along?
2- Does an immigrant has to pay the medical expenses of a child birth in Australia or is that covered in Medical provided by the country? Are there any extra expenses involved to be paid e.g. house maid etc which are mandatory as per law?
3- Are there any other benefits to the immigrants apart from the newborn to be a citizen of the country if the child birth happens in Australia?

1. I don't think you need to inform DIBP about pregnancy. But if the baby born after the grant, you have to apply for his/her visa separately, which will take some time.

2. Medical expenses are free during pregnancy and childbirth. I am not sure what you are referring to mandatory house maid, never heard/seen.

3. Don't think so.

Just to clarify, if pregnancy causes any issue with other processing (like medical check up), then it needs to be communicated of course.

1- I heard that you just need to inform DIBP about the new born and provide them the birth certificate and they will provide the visa etc.
2- What medical expenses are free as in? That's what my question was. If an immigrant family is having a baby, they wont be paying a single penny?

House maids are mandatory and are assigned before and after pregnancy by the authorized people of the hospitals to take care of the mother and child after birth. Which costs some money. I heard you can not really deny not to have one. I am not sure.

As far as I heard, you pretty much spend nothing during pregnancy and for the childbirth. However, I am not totally sure about house maid, I can check with my friends and let you know.

Please do check the updates on the child birth scenario too. I will be waiting.

@Santi there is actually nothing mentioned by the books for the "settlement on arrival" sort of thing for immigrants. So I believe you are on your own as soon as you land. Although you might start getting child support after a month OR two. Depends on how things work out for you.

Okay, here is the answers based on someone who has practical experience:

  1. During pregnancy and childbirth, all doctor/consultation/hospitalization/pre-post operative procedures/special support in any emergency are free. However, you have to purchase the prescribed medicine.
    • If you do NOT have medical insurance, you have to accept whatever is offered (government allocated doctor/shared cabin/release after 1 day in case of normal delivery and 3 days after the operative procedure).
    • If you have medical insurance, usually you can choose your doctor and get a dedicated cabin (of course depends on your insurance coverage).
    • If you do not have any job, you can get a health support card (different than medicare card), which will allow you to purchase medicines on discount.
  2. There is no "mandatory house maid" involved, at least not in NSW for sure.
  3. After childbirth, you will have monthly child support from centerlink.
  4. Also, based on your income level, you might be given a one-time payment. The amount reduced a lot in recent years (not sure if it is canceled very recently or not) and is highly dependent on your income level.

Sponsor the family members to be permanent residents. Your partner and children can directly get permanent residency as your dependent, whereas you can sponsor certain relatives to get temporary residency which leads to a permanent residency in 2 years.

Hello, thanks for detailed information. I find this very helpful! To your point about sponsoring family members, can a PR sponsor a dependent parent? What are the visa options? Any requirement that the dependent parent must meet? Thank you!

  • No personal contact and/or non-English phrase is allowed.
  • Always post in a relevant thread or open a new one.
  • Better to use the reactions in a post to congratulate/thank.
