Hi All,
I just got my frustrating IELTS score today which I have been waiting for, to increase my points.
I got 6.5 in writing, but overall 8, which does not allow me to gain the needed points.
It makes me think of the efficiency of the IELTS system!

However I need help increasing my writing score, obviously I am doing fine in the 3 other skills but not writing! (thanks to auto correction?)
I have gone through all the blogs/videos/tutors online
but it seems that I need personal help to guide me to my mistakes in the essays I write

I would appreciate your help

Hi Dotta

The score looks similar to what I received in IELTS before appearing for PTE. Everyone have there own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to language. A lot depends on what you have been into in the recent past.

For instance, being an IT guy I am reasonably fluent in typing, but when it comes to writing a 300 word essay with a pen/pencil under a time constraint, its a difficult task for me. Its hard to erase, reconstruct and rewrite the sentences if you make any mistake or if you want to modify a sentence/ paragraph. Not to forget you are already struggling with your handwriting.

I have to admit that only time I have used a pen in last decade is either to fill the forms or sign the documents.

My personnel advice, check and compare PTE and IELTS both and see with which you are most comfortable with. There are enough sources on the net along with few practice exams.

Its just out of my personnel experience and I don't doubt your ability to score in IELTS with enough practice.

Hi @Dotta Even I went through the same issue as you mentioned, twice. But, after some more preparation, I started receiving more than 7 whilst my speaking dropped!! Later on I tried PTE and got clear in the first attempt itself.

Since you are confident about the other three skills, there are some points, which you need to address before choosing the next exam.
1. whether you are comfortable writing with pen/pencil as @ZACH had mentioned.
If you are fine with the manual mode, IELTS is fine, but then it depends on your agility with the computer, if you are opting for PTE.

2. whether you were able to finish the essays well and properly in time, which depends on your speed and accuracy.
If you had no trouble finishing off the topics satisfying the word limit, then you need to practice more on the structure and vocabulary (choice of words). Provided that you're getting 6.5, have a look at the IELTS band descriptors, which will help you identify your mistakes up to a certain level.
Band descriptors for task 1: https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/IELTS_task_1_Writing_band_descriptors.pdf
Band descriptors for task 2: https://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/sites/default/files/IELTS_task_2_Writing_band_descriptors.pdf

3. whether you'll be able to get somebody to guide you, having authoritative command over English and preferably IELTS testing methods.
I'll recommend that it is the best to get your practice writings corrected by somebody as mentioned, since I personally felt the difference once I got some answers checked by a teacher of mine. I could've helped you a bit more if I had contact with her now, unluckily she's out of station on a holiday.

Considering both the exams, both of them are having merits and demerits. I can provide you a bit more details, but a lil while later.
Will get back to you soon @Dotta, since I consider this case seriously because I see a reflection of myself. Hoping you all the best.

Thank you so much guys, it always feels better to know that I am not alone
Yes I am really better at typing on the computer, and time is really constraining when I am hand writing
I don't know anything about PTE, is it easier then IELTS? do I do the whole test on computer?
I searched about it a while ago but found few resources online, if you have any please recommend

Hi @Dotta, As Dileep and Zach both mentioned, it really depends on your skills and approach to a task. If you're good in typing, then go for PTE, and yes, the whole test is on computer (All 4 Communicative Skills), in one sitting.

Advice: If you decide to go with PTE, then you must try to undertand the marking criteria of all the tasks.

By the way, what is your nominated occupation?

@Dotta Try downloading "PTE academic Test material by ANKIT KAPOOR" from 4shared.com. This is a practice/mock test that simulates a real PTE exam.

Hi @Dotta ,
Sorry for being late to reply. Since you find writing difficult and also are comfortable with a PC, then PTE is the better option. Here are some points that may help you in deciding,
1. The test is continuous one, with no breaks in between. (Toilet breaks are given but the time keeps on running)
2. The number of questions are far more than what you face in IELTS. (But not to worry ;) )
3. You cannot go back to an earlier question, ie. you have to answer the questions one by one, and the order is fixed which is not the case in IELTS since we can answer in any order as we wish.
4. For speaking, you speak into a microphone and the thing to note is the position of the mic, because it's better to keep it so that the breathing noises are not recorded, which will affect the marks adversely.
5. You get the result mostly within 24 hrs of taking the test.
6. Totally free of human interventions and human errors (other than those you might make).
7. Cost wise lesser than IELTS.
8. Only Australia is considering PTE as a valid test for english, for immigration purposes, if you are planning for other countries better to stick to IELTS.

Right now I am out of points. Let me check it some more and I'll be back.
