Did my initial entry last month and have been to Melbourne and Sydney. Both places are good but sydney is high on cost of living.

All i can say is take it slow .. as its a completely new place .. Finding a job in your field will be challenging.

Get the initial stuff sorted like bank accounts, TFN, Medicare etc ..

Find an accommodation, settle down and start your job hunt.

You should be on saving mode :) try to minimize expenditures in all ways possible till you land up in a job :)

Good luck ...

I am planning to travel in August mid, heard that with start of new financial year job opportunities will be more. Will be relocating to Sydney initially as IT jobs are more in number there.
Any suggestions for something like part-time work, till I do not get permanent job in my field.
@MysticRiver

Thanks!

both are very good cities. I think the cost of living in Brisbane is comparatively lesser than Melbourne. Melbourne and Sydney are getting congested (but don't compare the congestion like Bangalore or Mumbai :) ).

I live in Adelaide, less traffic, less people. but at the same time, less employment opportunities compared to MEL or SYD.
Is there any opportunities for Pharmacists in Adelaide?

How easy is to get a job at a vineyard for an Indian in Adelaide ? Have completed 3 Levels from WES - which have some value!
Are there jobs in the field of Design/Graphics/Animation in Adelaide ?

Yes..!!

Any info regarding the life and expenditure in the Adelaide (SA) region, feel free to tag me. :):)

As there are many defense related industries in and around Adelaide, most of the Job postings mention Citizens with NV1 clearance.
Will it be very difficult for someone on PR to find a job?

Don't know if this information going to help someone or not. Just sharing my experience.

  • So I left my489 Tas visa for 190 NSW visa and moved here. Transportation is expensive here. I got enrolled in college. If your college is eligible you might want to apply for concession OPAL card which cuts down your transportation price to almost half.
  • And acc to my experience when you got enrolled in any college, you are not eligible for HECS HELP but you are eligible for CSPs which is the subsidised fee which you have to pay upfront to college. Govt pays 60% of your fees and you just have to pay 30%.
  • You can't drive in NSW with international license after 3 months of getting PR. Within 3 months you have to apply for NSW license. For that you have to pass DKT then again you book for driving test. Then you would have NSW license.
  • If your workplace or college requires you to have any kind of vaccination, MEDICARE won't cover that. tHEY said you'll have to pay for that.
That is all I have to share until now. Also people with PR I suggest you to share your experience and benefits which we can get. Thanks

Hi mate,

Just saw your old post and had a question:

Did you apply and get two grants - TAS 489 and NSW 199??

Melbourne- VIC
I've moved to Melbourne about 1 n 1/2 year back. I haven't explored much of Australia yet, but sharing my experiences here:
I feel like the job market is different from other countries. They prefer local experience. First job here is really difficult! Melbourne's weather is very unpredictable. The wages are low and the cost of living is high compared to the USA. Other than these, it's a beautiful country. It takes time to settle down, but once you've settled, no looking back.

please let me know whether Australia is still a popular choice for migration after recent bush fires which devastated huge areas in Australia. (Some people say that Australia's temperature which sometimes rising up to about 40 degrees Celcius cannot be tolerable.)

please let me know whether Australia is still a popular choice for migration after recent bush fires which devastated huge areas in Australia.
(Some people say that Australia's temperature which sometimes rising up to about 40 degrees Celcius cannot be tolerable.)

Bush fires in Australia is a cyclic phenomenon which happens every year. This is very essential for the native indigenous flora and vegetation to regrow and nurture. But some time this will be devastating as it cannot be controlled and this keeps happening after few years. Most of these bush fires are in outbacks which affected the native farmers.

17% of Australia is covered by forest and 20% of this is affected by bush fire. That means less than 4% of total land of Australia is affected. To have an idea of size of Australia, it's more than double the size of India but the same population as the Delhi city.

But if you are going to stay away from the city and are concerned about the future bush fires, you need to think twice.

Regarding the temperature, due to the large size of the country you can experience all sorts of weathers within the country. there are few 40° C+ days approx 10-12 days per year. but this varies between cities. If you are in NT you will experience hotter days and the average during the summer lies at mid 30's. Same time, you will experience a much colder weather at TAS.

The beauty of Australia's weather is, not too cold as in Canada or North European countries..... averages at 20's for more than 6 months.... so those few 40+ during summer is not tolerable, again, think twice. :)

1) To be eligible for Defence jobs - you have to be a citizen then apply for the Baseline Security clearance which is NV1. 2) Getting jobs in the IT infrastructure side, please be prepared to equip with Certifications and be focus on your domain. It infrastructure mainly windows, office 365, sharepoint ..etc..if you have all of these certification chances are good..but stick to technical roles, It-Infrastructure Architecture, IT Security architecture, It business analyst dont jump to project management / project coordinator roles... as your cv will not even be considered. due to very less opportunity in It infrastructure PM or PC roles. My husband has been searching for close to 1 1/2 yrs but still not got any, there are others who come prepared for BA and Technical roles, even though they may have done or been a PM or even senior position. They have tweaked their cv just to get a job. Some have got technical roles within 2 weeks of landing in Here and others have taken somewere between 3 months to more than 1 year or more

On 489 yes, on PR like 190 or 189 no. you should be able to get some technical roles within 3 to 6 months if you only focus applying for a technical position. then its lot flexible

Hi @Srividya Sreekumar!

Thanks for the insights. I am too looking to land in Adelaide later this year and have got my 489 grant under 135112 code.

Is it extremely hard to land a PM or PC role in general??

Getting a Project Manager or Project coordinator role will be hard due to less opportunity in Adelaide. but certainly programmer or Architecture / or Business analyst job is much easier to crack

Hi @Srividya Sreekumar , thank you for the detailed info. This gives some perception on how to land a job. My husband has applied for a 489 Visa (SA). He's a Cloud Engineer (Azure). What role can my husband apply to increase the chances of landing a job in Adelaide. He's thinking of moving into DevOps. Would that help? Or could you suggest any such line of work?

Hi all, I have a query regarding the first entry for 189 Visa. Should the first entry be done together for all the family members/applicants or can it be done on different dates? We are planning that the secondary applicant travel alone first and the rest others in the coming months. As far as I understood each one has separate visa number, so entry maybe counted on individual visa. Can anyone confirm this?
