Good question. I also wanted to know and even asked one of the frequent member who migrated recently many times by message and in thread. But has refused to answer. Hopefully someone will open up their experience and give advice.

Please check the forum - SETTLING IN AUSTRALIA here, it has much info.

it will be of much help in deciding which state to move and also other criteria.

Deciding about which state is purely based on your situation and job opportunities for your profession in that particular state.

Hi..Thank you for the reply. Yeah I have checked "SETTLING IN AUSTRALIA" in MD. But was looking for the people who have already been there, if they have any thing to add.

I do agree that major deciding factor will be the job prospects, but what if we have enough opportunities in two cities, say Brisbane and Melbourne.

both are very good cities. I think the cost of living in Brisbane is comparatively lesser than Melbourne. Melbourne and Sydney are getting congested (but don't compare the congestion like Bangalore or Mumbai :) ).

I live in Adelaide, less traffic, less people. but at the same time, less employment opportunities compared to MEL or SYD.

Public trabsport is well connected, but frequency is comparatively less. This is also because the commuters are less.

Please tell about Queensland. Which place is best to live with respect to cost and job opportunities? And also estimate cost of living for a couple.

Guys...those who moved to Australia recently, please share your experiences for the future migrants as it will be of much help in deciding which state to move and also other criteria.
There has been a number of posts related to this context and I agree that they do get lost among the numerous posts on some of the major threads. But, one thing is that our members do have a general tendency to get off the grid after having their visa grants, and no one stays long enough to share their stories here.

I do agree that major deciding factor will be the job prospects, but what if we have enough opportunities in two cities, say Brisbane and Melbourne.
It's all personal choice as @namitha050 suggested. Factors people generally consider are:
1. Job prospects - depends on the companies that you've worked with and your field. I'm from construction and here the firms prefer people with local experience, and we'd have to opt for jobs with lesser salaries than we had previously, though it would only be for the initial period. Once you get the exposure, you can jump up the rungs quite fine.

2. Expenditure - Sydney takes the pole position, with Melb close behind. The others lie a bit behind in the rating, though the expenses, compared to overseas currencies may at times seem high. So, it's better not to compare the prices or have the prices in your native currency, since that may at times give a shock.

3. Locations with family/friends nearby - Its quite necessary to have a group you can hang out with, otherwise, people do get depressed quite a lot. During the initial period of job search, it could be a period of frustration. :)

4. Schools for children, if migrating along with - one of the major factors to choose your location, since their schooling is quite important and the property prices do soar around the schools which are at the top of the list.

5. Climate adjustments (some do not like the Melbourne climate since it does vary a lot, in terms of hours. The city where you can experience all the 4 seasons in 24 hours or less. :)) - I know some guys personally, who live in Sydney, but fell ill while on vacation in Melb. They couldn't cope with the random fluctuation in temperature, and the cold winds in the eve too. I don't know about the weather in other cities, but I can certainly say that it won't be similar to Melb.

Please tell about Queensland. Which place is best to live with respect to cost and job opportunities? And also estimate cost of living for a couple.
I have no idea about QLD, other than the cost of living is lesser than that of Melb. Here, we are currently in shared accommodation, and as a couple, we could make it through with $1500 per month, including rent and other expenses. You should also consider the one-time expenses related to kitchen and the commodities, so initially, I'd say that it'll come somewhere around $2k-2.5k and the earlier you get a good accommodation the better. Hotel stays (excluding food) do generally take upto $80-120 per day.

even asked one of the frequent member who migrated recently
I guess that'd be me. Am I right? Sorry if I was the one you meant mate. I had seen the profile post, but got a bit carried away with the current situation. I'll make up for it on this thread bro. :)

I entirely agree that this thread will be a better option to share the experiences and provide an outlook on what to expect, once we land here. Also, while posting some queries, just ensure that you tag any of the members whom you feel will be helpful.

Not much than you already know, since the thread which I intended to link here, already has a lot of suggestions and opinions from you!! But I'd like to hear more from a number of members who have already been granted and have shifted to SA earlier, but sadly seldom do visit MD nowadays.

@Srividya Sreekumar @Mymon @aakyl4ever

Here is the details: cost per week rent is 150$ if you are looking for shared accommodation. and the rent for unit can hover around 250 to 400 for individual unit or home. if you have family + 150 for food etc. Getting a job is very hard in SA mainly in IT that too if you are into Project management and we are still yet to land up in our chosen field. Its been more than 6 months in here. We are doing causal jobs so i hardly have time. Relating to Job..if you are into software development then please equip yourself with certificates or update / renew your certificates at least it will take you to the interview level and then its your technical skills that matter

@Dileep, thanks for the reply. What about for mechanical engineers mate? How is the job market? Which state do you recommend? Please give some tips.

Hi Namitha,

What do mean by less job opportunities in Adelaide compared to MEL or SYD? Is it really hard to find one. I am a mechanical engineer and would like to know the job prospects. Is it worth giving a try in Adelaide before MEL or SYD? Please advice.

What do mean by less job opportunities in Adelaide compared to MEL or SYD? Is it really hard to find one. I am a mechanical engineer and would like to know the job prospects. Is it worth giving a try in Adelaide before MEL or SYD? Please advice.

I am not sure how hard it is to find a job for Mech. Eng. in Adelaide region. In most cases, to get the first job is a bit tough. Same like getting a first rented house without having any previous rental history in Australia.
I am a mechanical simulation engineer, but my case was different. I am on 457 visa, sponsored by the employer. and, none of my friends is in the mechanical engineering field, to get some idea.
SA is projecting itself as manufacturing state with some new defence projects, submarine projects and a new aerospace lab is about to set -up. Rumours are there that Tesla may take over the shut-down Holden factory which will create many jobs. The closing of Holden factory released many engineering professionals and technicians out to the market for job hunting in the Adelaide region in 2017, but i hope they are already settled with new job through transformation program.

But for those, they have criteria to employ citizens, not residents. That's another issue with major government projects, with all the security clearance requirements.

That's true, even though they mention the equal opportunity for citizens & Permanent Residents. But what I mean is, these projects will boost the manufacturing industry and give life again to many subcontractors, vendors and tier-1 suppliers.
