Hello!
I'm a bit confused as to how VETASSESS would evaluate my case, and would love your advice before I prepare my application. Here's my background -

Bachelors Degree: Marketing (UK degree)
Employed as: UI/UX designer (Which is a mobile & web designer role)
Years of experience: more than 5 years as a UI/UX Designer
Nominated occupation: 232414 Web Designer

On the VETASSESS website [link] for Web Designer, it states these two things:
If the qualification is not in a highly relevant field, then the applicant must have:
  • three years of post-qualification employment experience at an appropriate skill level,
  • undertaken in the last five years,
  • working 20 hours or more per week, and
  • highly relevant to the nominated occupation.
and,
Please note in order to achieve a successful Skills Assessment Outcome, a positive assessment for both qualifications and employment is required.

I feel like the above are two clashing statements?

I am able to provide my employment contracts, employer's statement of service, payslips, bank statements, etc to prove my occupation. However, does anyone have a similar experience - does VETASSESS take into account my formal education and deem it as irrelevant to the nominated occupation, and process it as negative?

Appreciate all the insights I can get! 🙏

I believe if you meet the first criteria, your qualification will be assessed positively.

In your case, I believe it's fine if you have an irrelevant qualification. 3 years of experience will be deducted to make up for the qualification and the remaining years will be assessed as work experience. Just make sure how many years they require to assess your application as positive. Wishing you the best luck.

Hey Tracy!

I'm in the same situation (Interior Designer) with irrelevant bachelor degree and relevant experience. In our case, the positive assessment of our qualification will only be about the level of it (bachelor), not the field.
For the experience, they take off the very first year that they consider as a qualification year, and will only consider the rest. So as long as your bachelor degree is legit and you have 3 years of highly relevant experience within the last five years in your field, you should be good.

Good luck!

Hello! May I ask why did they take off one year from your work experience? Is this because of your irrelevant Bachelor's degree? So does that mean if I have a relevant degree, no years in my experience will be taken off?

By the way, I have a degree in Statistics and will nominate Statistician (224113). Though I've been working as a Data Analyst, not sure if that will be positively assessed. Would love to get some thoughts (please!!!) from anyone here in the site, given that you have the similar experience.

Thank you!

I need to precise that I didn't get the outcome for my application yet, so I am only assuming and looking for similar cases.

Whether your qualification is relevant or not, VETASSESS does not count your very first year of experience as relevant (therefore 5 years should be considered as 4 only), I know this from other testimonies, so not sure if it applies to every case.

Hello,

I am no expert in this. I'm speaking from my experience with VETASSESS and I hope this helps.

Firstly, my nomination occupation is Graphic Designer. Please note that different occupations may have different requirements. However, the general rules apply to all: You have to pass the minimum requirement of qualifications and work experience.

In my case, the minimum requirement is a relevant qualification (or 3 years experience as a replacement) and 1 year work experience. So it means:
1. If I have a relevant qualification and 5 years experience, the outcome is likely to be positive with 4 years experience that I can claim points for.
2. If I don't have a relevant qualification and 5 years experience, the outcome is likely to be positive with 1 year experience that I can claim points for.

I hope this gives better clarity. Good luck everyone.

Hello! May i ask if your application as graphic designer was granted already?

Hi everyone, thank you for your sharing. I am really confused with my case:

I have a degree in Bachelor of Business (Major in Marketing). I am working in a job that is relevant to Public Relations Professional Occupation for almost a year now (will be at the end of this month).

I am thinking of applying the Skill Assessment for this profession but I am very concerned that my degree is not highly relevant and I will only have one year of experience.

My agent said that it would still be possible for my case but I am quite doubtful after reading people's advices :(

Much appreciate if someone could please give me some insights/opinions on my case!! Thanks in advance!!

I am in a bit of mix at the moment. Need your views on the situation.

232414: Web Designer

Bachelor's Degree: Mechanical Engg ( not relevant to job)
Master's Degree: Product Design (the courses and assignments fully relevant but thesis is not)
Employed as: Industrial Designer ~4yrs (non-relevant on paper but work wise fully relevant)
UI/UX designer 2 yrs (Highly relevant)
Years of experience: 6 years

Background - I am currently working for a renowned US based apparel company as a senior UX designer. My past experience designations have been Lead UX Designer where all my roles are highly relevant to the ANZSCO list. I have submitted the necessary portoflio and documents showcasing my work and skills which I thought would suffice but apparently not.
I was apprehensive about the industrial design work experience and master's degree as on the paper they don't fully relate to UX/web design but the work and skills required are all relevant. However Vetasses have come back saying insufficient details for both. Just wondering how to go about it. My agent says write a letter which describes the roles and work done but not having a very positive feeling about it.
Any suggestions or Views appreciated

Also looking out to connect with webdesigner applicants here.

Thanks

I hear from an agent and other forums (ie. reddit) that VETASSESS is very strict on the accuracy of each occupation. So regardless if your work experience in industrial design has similar skills with Web Designer, it still does not belong in the same category. Similar to how 'Graphic Designer' role is not under the same ANZSCO code as 'Web Designer' despite sharing some similar skills (ie. working with colours, typography, layout, etc).

Your agent advised to write a letter to describe the roles and work done – did you not provide Statement of Service from your employer(s)? That would have contained your roles and work done. Unless that is still insufficient for VETASSESS?

Yeah I did provide statement of service which had all roles. But bummer ...they got back saying it is not sufficient. But in the skill assessment it says relevant degree and minimum two years experience. I am hoping my profile cuts based on my current designation.

Earlier when you said “Vetasses have come back saying insufficient details for both”which are these referring to? Work experience and skills required?

Also yeah I noticed the minimum requirements on vetassess website. In your case, shouldn’t it be minimum 1 year? Since you have a highly relevant Masters degree in product design? Unless the timeline doesn’t match… When did you gain your masters vs started your UX career?

insufficient details in master's program and first employment.
But tagging insufficient for master's is also kinda weird coz I have provided my transcripts and certificate...they can see all the courses I have done but they still want more details. Too much scrutiny.

And yes you are right about requirement being minimum 1 year. But that is if my email convinces. The gap between Mdes and UX is 3.5 years.
