What is VEVO?
VEVO is the official online portal of DIBP for the Australian visa holders to check their current visa status.
Who has access to VEVO?
Everybody who has an Australian visa granted has the access to VEVO irrespective of which subclass/type his/her visa belongs to.
Why is VEVO important?
As we know, Australia has a paperless visa system, e.g. you won't have any stamp in your passport. So, VEVO offers you the proof of your Australian visa, if you need to submit that proof to anywhere.
Do I need to submit the proof of my Australian Visa to the Australian airport immigration officer?
No, you do not need to submit the proof at Australian immigration at any Australian airport, because they are the VEVO guys . They know whether you have a valid visa or not (based on your passport).
Then, where do I submit the proof of my Australian Visa?
Any 3rd party agency, e.g. when you try to board a plane to Sydney at London Heathrow airport, or, when you apply for Schengen visa in Australia. Basically, you might be asked to show the evidence at different situations wherever your residency status is important for the outcome of an action.
What is the problem with my grant letter as a proof?
There are 2 issues:
Many institutions do not accept or discourage the hard copy for the obvious reason that it is very easy to forge that document. Instead, through your VEVO system, you can request DIBP to send the proof to the requester's email address. The system will instantly send an official confirmation from DIBP server to the requester.
So, there is no point of carrying the hard copy, right?
Well, unfortunately, not everyone around the globe is aware of this VEVO system, hence I would recommend to carry the hard copy as well as a backup.
How can I access VEVO?
All the visa holders will be able to check their visa status in the VEVO system through the following link
https://online.immi.gov.au/evo/firstParty?actionType=query
Even better, they can download mobile apps, which is far easier to handle in a hurry
Apple Store: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id988252820
Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.gov.border.myvevo
What information do I need to access VEVO?
For a mobile app, initially, you need to setup a pin by providing your date of birth, passport details, and visa Grant Number or Transaction Reference Number (TRN). For any subsequent login, you just use your pin.
For web-based access, you need to provide DOB, Country, Passport number, and visa Grant Number/Transaction Reference Number (TRN)/visa evidence number/a preset password every time.
Why don't I have my VISA grant number when I save VEVO as PDF though I can see it in my VEVO account?
It is intentional. VISA grant number is a confidential property of the applicant, hence it is removed from the PDF version (which is meant for printing). It's up to the applicants whether they want to share that with a specific institution or not.
How does VEVO look like?
This is what it looks like for a 189 visa holder.
What is "Location" in my VEVO page?
It indicates whether you are currently in Australia (Onshore) or outside Australia (Offshore).
What is "Enter before date" in my VEVO?
It indicates your initial entry date (IED) given to you with your grant letter.
How can I send the official proof of my visa status to any authority?
Request the email address where the confirmation should be sent, and then click on "Send Email" button. Rest is self-explanatory:

What is the problem with my grant letter as a proof?
There are 2 issues:
- Your grant letter is a proof that you had your visa granted, but it does not prove that your visa is still valid (not canceled) as of today
- If you have your passport changed, you need to request DIBP for a new grant letter, whereas updating your record in VEVO is pretty easy.
