Undoubtedly, most of engineers in the Middle East or Gulf areas are just working as coordinators in handling projects or driving any maintenance process in any service jobs. As a mechanical engineer willing to work in Australia after getting my 189 subclass visa invitation I am currently stumbled by crucial high standards requirements to work in Australia. One of the obstacles I am being faced is DESIGN capabilities using 2D and 3D CAD, ability to use ERP processing and some other demands which require many courses and trainings to be conquered. My question is what is the advisable ways to approach such obstacles as per your practical experiences shall I start from the beginning and get more courses?

This is a very important topic. This issue is not localized to any demographic population or any specific occupation, rather it is a common problem for every migrants. I have many acquaintances who struggle to get their first job despite having a good educational background as well as large overseas experience in related field.

The main obstacle or reason for this difficulty is, as per I understand, the more importance given by the employers for local experience. So, having a one year experience in Australia speaks much louder than even 9/10 years overseas experience. Hence, I think it is prudent to start trying to do some part time job in the related field, even if the payment is not that much, just to gain some local experience.

Another important aspect is, like you said, the knowledge of things in demand. The quickest way is to finish some short term diploma on specific field which will boost your CV a lot. One of the very popular and effective means is the courses offered by TAFE.

Dear MysticRiver

I am grateful to your input and as I could guess that it is a common concern. Here I would like to get more details in TAFE short courses do you think is it recommended to determine the specialization course and get enrolled before traveling to Aust. If possible?

I am not sure if they offer any online courses that you can take from overseas. People I know started those once they came to Australia.

To know more about TAFE, visit their website.

I am a chemical engineer, and I have been working for a refinery as a senior process engineer. However, I was assessed as an industrial engineer by Engineers Australia. I just want to know is it feasible for me to seek a job in my original field or should I apply for jobs related to industrial engineer?

You are free to go for any job you want. Your skill assessment pose no obligation to your life, its for visa purpose only.

Q4. How about recruitment agencies?

1. Search your intended field and apply. If possible, get a local deploma.

2. Centerlink can assist you to find a job, but you can't just take that granted. They can show you the path, but you have to find your way. They gave you immigration, now its your time to help yourself.

3. Seek.com.au

4. I really don't believe in agnecies in this open era of internet.

I have not granted visa yet, but I am sure I will get my permanent residence in the coming month. Should I apply for jobs in Australia and send my resume to companies from now? Or it is better to stop searching for a job and waiting for visa grant and after that I should apply for a job? Please share your idea with me.

Well, there is nothing to say about this. Applying now, or anytime is not going to do any harm, right? So, you can ofcourse apply. This is different thing that it is very tough to get a job from abroad. Also most of the employer will ask your visa status (because very seldom an employer will apply 457 visa for you).

Things are quite crazy for me because now I secure no job anymore in my home country and it takes a month from now to land in Australia. :)

Seek.com.au is quite good, and I suggest you guys to create "saved searches" with job keywords you think helpful, so that the app updates you from time to time by reporting which new positions are available.

Mystic, interesting comment about #4. I thought it was useful to contact or at least send the CV to them when you are a new migrant. I can say I don't use agencies in my own country anymore either.

Oh, I must say my statement was little bit fuzzy :). I have worked in several countries and some of them were through agencies. As a matter of fact, many companies now prefer to outsource the preliminary selections of candidates to the agencies, and hence many jobs actually come via agency. So, there is no way you just avoid the circulars from agencies.

Instead, my comment was about going to some agency offices and pay them in advance to search a job for you. While, I am not saying that is worthless, I am just saying that there are so many free websites (like seek.com.au, where many of the circulars come from agencies actually) where agencies/companies post job circulars, which should be the first priority instead of paying them upfront.

Consider before posting:
  • Do not post the same thing in multiple places.
  • No personal contact and/or non-English phrase is allowed.
  • Always post in a relevant thread or open a new one.
  • Better to use the reactions in a post to congratulate/thank.
